Address Book is great for keeping track of contact information, but it has several other helpful tricks up its sleeve. For example, with a few quick changes tweaks, you can use it to automatically create a calendar for keeping track of birthdays in iCal. Once this calendar has been created, anytime you add a contact’s birthday to your address book it will automatically show up in iCal on their birthday each year.
The first thing you’ll need to do is add a field for storing birthdays in Address Book. Launch address book, and examine a contact card. If you push the “edit” button, you will notice that there isn’t a field for birthdays. Navigate to the Card→Add Field menu, and you can choose to add a Birthday field (or many other fields like Phonetic Spelling or Nickname). Once you’ve selected the “Birthday” field, you can add the contact’s birthday and click the edit button at the bottom of the card again to save this information.
This could get tedious if you had to repeat the action for every card (the case by case basis is useful for adding things that many of your contacts might not have, like Suffixes), so there’s also a way to edit the template so that all cards will have a new field.
You can either navigate to Card→Edit Template or File→Preferences (and select the Template tab). This is the preference section where you can select what data is able to be input on any contact’s address book card. From the “Add Field” drop-down list in the template preferences pane, choose “Birthday” and close the Preferences window.
Now, all of the contact cards will have a Birthday field when you edit them (including cards that already existed and any cards you make after this).
Now, these birthdays are stored in Address Book, but they won’t automatically show up in iCal without one final step. Launch iCal, and open File→Preferences. Once this has launched, look at the General tab that opens by default. Check the box labled “Show Birthdays calendar.”
Close the Preferences window, and you will notice that any birthdays saved to contact cards in Address Book will automatically appear on a new “Subscriptions” calendar called “Birthdays.” From now on, whenever you add a birthday to a contact card, it will automatically be added to this calendar and you won’t need to remember to add them, make sure they repeat each year, or anything. Address Book and iCal will take care of all of that for you. You’re still on your own for sending a card, though!
