Do You See What I See?

Whether you need an image of something you’re doing in an application to paste into a document, or you’re trying to explain what you’re seeing on your screen to someone in a different location, sometimes it’s useful to have a photo of what you’re seeing on your monitor at a specific time. Enter the lowly screenshot - OS X has several different ways to accomplish this. I’ve had Windows users tell me that OS X doesn’t have a way to take screenshots, but in actuality the techniques are just a bit different.

Tickling the Plastics - Know Your Keyboard

When learning any woodwind instrument, one of the first things you learn is different finger positions that produce different notes. Similarly, you learn finger positions on the keyboard when learning to type. Most people are familiar with home-row typing, but many are fuzzy on the details when it comes to things you can do by cheating on the home row a bit. We’ll kick off today with a selection of a few easy keyboard commands that will change your life (or at least, make navigating your computer a bit easier!).

Many of these things can be done with a mouse, but it’s faster to use a keyboard if you’re already typing. One example you can use in web browsers like the one you’re reading now is the space bar. You could either move your hand to your mouse, move the mouse to the scroll bar on the side of your browser, and then move the scroll bar along as you read. Seems like a lot of work when you write it all out like that. Feeling lazy? Just press the space bar instead, and the web browser will automatically scroll down one screen-full of content at a time.
