FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions about Unseemly Raptor (updated as needed)

Q: What version of OS X are you blogging about?

A: I currently have OS X 10.4 (Tiger) installed. I’ll be trying my luck with 10.5 (Leopard) when it comes out in October, but rest assured - I’ll have Tiger and Leopard running on separate computers so I’ll show you some neat stuff in Leopard, but I’ll keep talking about Tiger, too.

Q: What version of OS X am I running?

A: Go to the Apple menu in the upper left corner of your screen. Select “About This Mac.” A screen shot pop up that tells you what version you’re currently running. 10.4.# is Tiger (the # designates which updates you’ve installed). 10.5.# is Leopard. You can see all of the version numbers and names in this Wikipedia entry.

Q: Will you fix my computer?

A: No, Unseemly Raptor isn’t about free tech support. While I’d love to be able to fix everyone’s problems, it’s not really feasible in this context. For starters, it’s very difficult to diagnose and repair a computer over the internet. I’m also not a certified repair guru. If your computer is actually broken, you can talk to a Genius at a Retail Apple Store or ask around on the Apple Support Forums.

Q: Ok, if you can’t fix my computer, what can you do?

A: I’m happy to answer questions about how to do more with your computer than surf the web and read your email by unveiling neat stuff you might not have thought of using your computer for, teach you how to do something you wish you could do but haven’t been able to figure out, or try to uncover solutions to typical frustrations users have with their Macs. If you’re not sure whether something you’re encountering is the computer being broken, or you just not being sure how to make it do what you want – go ahead and drop me a line anyway. I’ll try to let you know if it is something I can answer, or at least point you in the direction of a place you might be able to get an answer.

Q: I feel like I don’t use my .Mac account nearly as much as I could. Can you help me take advantage of my .Mac account?

A: As you may have guessed, in real life I play a geek. I have my own hosted webspace elsewhere, so I haven’t paid for a .Mac account. I’m not opposed to the idea, but not ready to spend $100 on an account to play with just yet. Let’s see how the blog progresses and how many readers there are in the future - this is a topic I might look into eventually.
